Hygienist Care | Oral Hygiene

A healthy mouth is a healthy body. Substantial research has found a strong link between periodontal disease (gum disease) and a host of serious health complications, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, digestive disorders, stroke and cancer.

Often signs of poor oral hygiene go unnoticed until disease advances and one or more of the following symptoms are present:

  • Excessive plaque build-up
  • Persistent bad breath (halitosis)
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold beverages and food
  • Red, inflamed gums
  • Bleeding during and post-brushing/flossing
  • Dry mouth (xerostomia)
  • Discoloured teeth
  • Frequent toothaches and pain

To ensure you maintain excellent oral hygiene, our experienced hygienist team at Pascoe Vale Dental Group are committed to providing you with first-class care and preventive education. The reality is, if you do not adequately look after your teeth and gums or treat problems, periodontal disease, tooth loss and far more serious health conditions are possible outcomes.

Find out how to establish an effective dental care regime below. These preventative steps are important to help stop oral infections and disease before they develop or advance. They may also reverse existing damage if adopted in time.

Scheduled maintenance

By Attending the our dental practice every 6 months will provide more than just a professional cleaning. They’re an opportunity for your dentist to examine the health of your teeth and gums and identify potential problems as soon as possible. If oral problems are treated early, there’s a better chance of reversing damage and avoiding the cost of more complex, expensive and time-consuming dental procedures (such as a root canal). It’s also important to receive a professional clean to get rid of built-up tartar that cannot be removed at home, and have fluoride solutions applied to prevent future tooth decay. Lastly, our dental hygienist will update your Bitewing X rays and periodontal gum chart every 2 years, they can provide dietary advice to further prevent the advancement of oral disease, if present.

Daily oral care at home

Maintaining your oral hygiene is a team effort. The Pascoe Vale Dental Group team will professionally evaluate and clean your teeth and gums during your 6 month clean and check up. Ultimately, between dental visits, it’s your responsibility to care for your oral health at home with a daily routine.

We recommend you thoroughly brush your teeth, around gums and your tongue twice a day for a minimum of two minutes. Floss at least once per day to remove residual food that brushing couldn’t reach. Try to use dental products containing fluoride, such as toothpastes and mouthwashes, where possible. Limiting snacks between main meals and eating a balanced diet will also help to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Contact us today to schedule your 6 month clean and check up. Our team will ensure your dental needs are well catered for with first-class care.
