TMJ Treatment

The temporomandibular joint, also known as the jaw joint or TMJ, is one of the body’s most frequently used joints. It connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull; playing a vital role in controlling speech, chewing and yawning.

TMJ disorders occur when the jaw joint and surrounding facial muscles no longer move freely. Limited movement or a misaligned jaw cause the TMJ to become inflamed, with headaches and migraines both common complaints. Other symptoms may include toothaches, ringing in the ears, hearing loss, pain when chewing, clenching and grinding teeth (bruxism), nausea and neck or back pain, among others.

A comprehensive dental assessment can identify the source of TMJ disorders and help find a remedy for your pain; for example, implementing relaxation techniques and meditation to reduce stress, prosthetics to correct an uneven bite and damaged teeth, or even wearing a customised mouthguard.

It is important to accurately diagnose TMJ disorders to ensure the jaw is restored with a tailored treatment plan and further tooth damage is prevented. Contact our team today to schedule an appointment if you are experiencing problems with your jaw.
